Prof. BAI Chunli, a leading Chinese expert in nano-science and technology, has been awarded the Honorary Fellowship (HonFRSC) of the London-based Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). The presentation ceremony was held on 12 December in Beijing.

    RSC was established in 1980 on the basis of the Chemical Society, the Society for Analytical Chemistry, the Royal Institute of Chemistry and the Faraday Society. Its earliest precursor, the Chemical Society, was founded in 1841. Today, RSC is the longest continuous tradition of any chemical society in the world with a global membership of over 44,000.

    HonFRSC is awarded by RSC Council to distinguished scientists who have made an outstanding contribution to the chemical sciences. They can also be awarded for work outside of chemistry if it has had a significant impact on the chemical sciences. Honorary fellowships can also be awarded to other distinguished persons whose activities have been of significant benefit to the chemical community.  Altogether, only 87 people across the world have received the honor, and Prof. Bai is the first Chinese for this honor.

    Prof. Bai, who is also a CAS Member and executive vice president of CAS, has been devoted to the development of nano-science and technology and its public understanding. As president of the Chinese Chemical Society, he actively promotes the exchanges and cooperation in chemistry between China and other parts of the world. To recognize his prominent research achievements in nanoscience and technology and his outstanding contributions to international collaborations in the field, RSC Council decided to award him the honor.
